What Your Divine Calling has in Common with an 18-Wheeler?

The other day, I had to run a quick errand in the middle of the day (I’d lost my earphones and if you know me, you know I don’t last very long without my Ipod!), so I jumped in the car.

Once on the highway, I started to pass an enormous 18-wheeler because, after all, I had that important task to complete. All of a sudden, the driver stuck his hand out the window to stop me. Of course, I slowed right down. It was clear he needed to make a wide left turn.

And as I waited for him, a message came from God just as loud as it could be. Our calling is a massive vehicle that has the right of way. Other things in our life–even the things we deem super-important in the moment–should yield to our calling when we tell them to. But how many of us really give our calling that kind of respect or importance?

In the traffic around me, I spotted a small Kia and heard God’s voice again: “People are walking around thinking their destiny is the size of a tiny Kia, when what I’ve given them is an enormous, powerful 18-wheeler!”

The ability you have is so much bigger than the vehicle or lane you are in. And it’s time to make room for how big your purpose really is.

Think about it. You’ve been yielding the right of way to every other vehicle on the road. It’s as if you’ve been carefully dodging traffic and waiting for the green light–driving the speed limit in your safe, little car.

Until now. Your Kia was a perfectly fine and adequate vehicle that’s worked for you for a while, but it’s not what you were designed for and definitely not where you need to stay.

If you’re reading this, you know how big your calling is.

A few years ago, I was “driving a Kia.” (Smile.) You may know that I got my dream job at a prestigious Atlanta law firm right out of law school. At 25, I was riding the elevator up to the 23rd floor. It was a job that others coveted and I’d been pretty gutsy negotiating the terms for myself–I was doing very well.

But after about a year and a half, I felt discouraged. Talented, able… and really unfulfilled. My calling was a lot bigger than that safe, small car I was driving–and I knew it. Even though many people told me I was crazy to leave and destined for failure, I left.

In faith, I stepped into the driver’s seat of my own 18-wheeler destiny. And I told the other things in my life to yield to my big calling.

And you can, too.
